ELVIRA L. SCORGIE PRESERVATION AWARD

scorgie awardOne of the Historical Commission’s many responsiblities is to advocate in support of historic preservation in all of its various forms.  Historic preservation occurs in the many acts of residents caring for their historic properties, in the volunteers working on their various projects of research, project management and other myriad tasks in support of Harvard’s wealth in historic and cultural assets.

While word does get around and we hear of these various acts of dedication, the cause is sufficiently important to warrant a special klieg light event to bring attention to the event.

I would like to propose to the Historical Commission for their consideration, the idea that the Commission should sponsor a preservation award. Given the lifetime of dedication which Miss Elvira Scorgie gave to Harvard’s historic assets, the award should be in her name. So, that while we honor an individual in their contribution to historic preservation, we would also honor Miss Scorgie and her life’s work in Harvard in teaching, in her research under the auspices of the Historical Society and in her many, many ‘walks around the town’ to educate our residents and visitors on the history of Harvard.

We will take it up at our next meeting. The proposal was actually from Ron Ostberg at our last meeting. Thanks for the superb idea, Ron!
